Byron Schenkman, acclaimed harpsichordist, pianist and music Director, performs a lovely program of harpsichord music of the Classical period. Musical tastes shifted In the mid 18th century, away from the serious grandeur of the Baroque and towards lighter, elegant music filled with variety and contrast. Joseph Haydn’s two harpsichord Sonatas on the program exemplify the Classical style and sparkle with elegance and wit. Domenico Scarlatti’s three Sonatas, while rather freer in style, are no less dazzling and absorbing. Other lovely works on the program remind us that the Classical style was advanced by a diverse group of composers. Sonatas written by Anna Bonn and Marie-Emmanuelle Bayon, both renowned musicians in their time, are delightful and have stood the test of time. And, the Adagio by Joseph Bologne, a brilliant, multi-talented biracial man of color who moved in the court of Marie Antoinette, is extraordinarily moving. This Program of elegant, effervescent music is guaranteed to charm and enchant.

Early Music Review (UK) – ‘Schenkman’s playing is exemplary: clear, without affectation and with subtle ornamentation… In a very crowded field (this) Scarlatti recording sticks out for the intelligence and bravura of the playing’

Early Music America – ‘Schenkman’s performances …are fluent, idiomatic, and engaging’

Gothic Catalogue – Byron Schenkman’s ‘… CD of Handel Harpsichord Variations has been called “dazzling” by American Recorder Guide; his D’Anglebert CD was “strongly recommended” by Fanfare Magazine; and his program of 17th-century French music from the Bauyn Manuscript was hailed as “overall one of the best harpsichord CD’s I’ve come across” by Early Music Review (UK)’
